Andaman Holidays Joins Tourist Boycott Campaign

Survival International and SEARCH, a local organization had started a campaign on 22nd June 2011 calling tourists worldwide to boycott the most controversial Andaman Trunk Road that cuts right through the home of the endangered Jarawa tribe of Andaman Island. The campaign was well received by the tourists across the globe and also travel agencies who used to conduct Jarawa tours in the Islands. Learning about the seriousness of the campaign, the President of Andaman Tour Operators Association had rendered all support to the campaign to end tourism in the name of Jarawa.

In a recent development today, ‘Andaman Holidays’, one of the leading tour operators in the islands today called up SEARCH and expressed its willingness to join the campaign. Shri R. Ratnam, Managing Director of Andaman Holidays today met the Director of SEARCH and said that he has been deeply moved after realizing the seriousness of the campaign to protect and preserve the Jarawa tribe.

“We have been receiving several enquiries on Jarawa tours and same day return trips from Baratang. But we have started refusing our customers to go ahead with it. While asking for a reason, we direct them to a link of Survival International’s website, which calls tourists to boycott the Andaman Trunk Road”, Rathnam said.

“Since last week we received 6 enquiries and 5 of them returned to us saying they would not travel on the ATR if it is dangerous for the Jarawa tribe”, he added.

‘Andaman Holidays’ handles about 1500 Indian tourists and 300 Foreign tourists annually. The tour company has been catering to high end tourists like Sir Ian Botham, former captain of England Cricket Team who had visited the islands. Apart from them the tour operator company caters to business firms and associations including National Thermal Power Corporation, Power Finance Corporation, Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry Association, Airports Authority of India among others.

Few points to keep in mind when you are planning to visit Andaman

For foreign tourists:

1. If you happen to have foreign passport, it must be valid for at least 6 months duration.

2. If you are not Indian by nationality, you must have a valid Indian visa.
3. Andaman Islands are restricted zone. If your visa has a stamp that says "Not valid for restricted areas" or something similar, you may not be allowed to enter Andaman Islands. In case you have such restriction, the immigration officer may or may not allow you or they may advice you to contact the issuing embassy and remove such restriction. Till such time you may be deputed to mainland India.

As per Indian standard time, sunrise is generally between 0500 and 0530 hours and sunset is at 1730 hours. Since Andaman and Nicobar Islands are very near the equator line, they have early sunrises and sunsets. Day starts quite early with sun rising as early as 0500 hours some times and gets dark early as well. So getting up early will help you have more hours to visit and enjoy the sights.

Andaman Islands Ferry Service from Port Blair to other islands is famous for its timely and regular service. But sometimes due to adverse weather and mechanical trouble, they may be cancelled. So plan room for unscheduled and unavoidable delays while booking flights.

If you are spending the last leg of the tour at Havelock, please arrange to spend the last night prior to boarding at Port Blair. There is no ferry to take you to Port Blair early enough to catch the flight back to mainland India the same day.

It is recommended to enjoy scuba diving a day after your air travel to avoid any health complication as undertaking scuba diving and air travel on the same day may cause some health concerns due to compression reasons and may indispose travellers.

To travel in style, you can charter a speedboat or an amphibian seaplane from Port Blair to Havelock Island as well to reach Port Blair from Havelock Island the day you are flying out to India.

Interesting facts about Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Marine life in Andaman Islands
  • World’s largest sea turtles - the leatherback turtles - come to the calm and serene waters of Andaman Islands every year for nesting.
  • These endangered species - called Dermochelys Coriacea - look huge - growing up to two meters long and one meter in diameter and growing up to 500 kg in weight.
  • These turtles flock to Andaman coast line in huge numbers - as many as 1,000 turtles every year.
  • Only four places in the world can boast of these nesting places and Andaman is one with 30 of its islands where the turtles nest nominated as National Parks.
  • As many as 94 islands have been chosen as National Parks - including those with nesting leatherback turtles.
  • These Islands include some 8 National Sea Parks as well.
  • Commercial fishing is not encouraged generally in Andaman Islands and no fishing is allowed in the restricted and reserve areas except by the aboriginal tribe people who live in the restricted areas. Hence it is where "fish die of old age" because they are allowed to live a full life.
About land life

There are exotic animals, birds and butterfly species which are endemic to only these areas which add to the ecological special nature of these islands.
  • There are as many as 58 species of animals live in Andaman & Nicobar Island Groups. Some 60% of these animals are endemic to these islands only.
  • There are a host of butterflies flocking to the thick tropical forests of Andaman Islands.  Half of these butterflies are found only in these Islands.
  • The largest of the land-living arthropod (Birgus Latro) lives in Andaman Islands. These are land-living crabs. Since they climb up coconut trees at night time for the soft kernels of tender coconuts stealthily they are nick-named as - ‘Robber Crabs.’ They make a tiny hole and suck the entire kernel portion leaving out the shells as they are. These crabs are found in some parts of Nicobar Islands as well as areas of South Sentinel Island.
  • Very few of the state animal Dugong are held in captivity as they are very shy and do not breed easily. There are only five dugongs in captivity in the world. Japan and Australia each have two dugongs at Mie Toba Aquarium and at Sea World on the Gold Coast, Queensland where they draw huge crowds of visitors. The fifth dugong is in Singapore at Underwater World, Sentosa Island. As they prefer the sea grass abundantly available along the Andaman Island coast line, sometimes lucky visitors have been able to spot them in all their natural glory!

Many plant species and their subspecies found in many of the Andaman & Nicobar Island Groups are endemic to these areas. Nowhere else in the world you can find them generally.
  • Some 40% of plants and their subspecies found Emerald Island is endemic to only that island.
Ecological specialties
  • Andaman Islands have the distinction of having the only active volcano in all South Asia regions. Barren Island which is some 135 km northeast of Port Blair is where you can see the live volcano but from a distance.
  • Katchal Island in Nicobar Islands enjoyed the distinction of being the first place to receive the first sunrays of this millennium sunrise.
